Ponusamy Karunaharan

I was Born in Sri Lanka and migrated to the UK in 1963 to pursue professional studies in Cost and Management Accountancy. I trained as Management Accountant at EMI group of companies, worked as Chief Accountant for The Mermaid Theatre Trust Ltd, Programmes Ltd and Groupe Charles Andre from 1970 to 1999. As my conviction is to give back what mother nature has amply provided me , I decided to give my time to charitable causes and hence worked for the Rugby Portobello Trust (supported housing charity) and CrusAID (international AIDS charity) from 1999 until retirement in 2007.

Sri Lanka, my country of birth, has gone through tremendous turmoil for more than four decades and as a consequence several thousands of Tamil people were tortured and killed, half a million or more escaped to India by sea and nearly a million Tamil people, escaped the tyranny and brutality in their own land, to become refugees and asylum seekers in the West and Canada. Having seen and read reports of the atrocities and suffering of my own people, I decided to give greater part of my retirement for the cause of refugees and asylum seekers, immaterial of their nationality. Coincidentally, as soon as I retired in 2005, a volunteering opportunity arose at BRS for the position of Trustee/Treasurer and I grabbed that God sent opportunity by both hands and have enjoyed every moment of serving the needs of BRS clients.

Apart from BRS I have been volunteering at The Royal Free Hospital and two Philosophy schools . I believe voluntary service is a must for everyone and it has been helping me to grow from strength to strength.
