Since February 2006 we have been running a women’s group. Many of our female clients are isolated and suffer a host of physical and mental health problems as a result of torture and trauma. This is an opportunity for women to make social contacts improve their self esteem and self confidence through learning new skills and work towards a positive integration. It is also a potential platform to invite speakers to talk about relevant health issues such as child health, sexual health, health screening and other relevant topics. In September 2007, the group moved to the artsdepot in North Finchley from where the participants worked towards the Roots & Wings exhibition to be held at the Milly Apthorp Gallery at the Arts Depot in April 2008. The Roots & Wings is a participatory arts programme which is lead by arts consultant, Poppy Szaybo, involving refugees and asylum seekers, exiled artists & migrant communities living & working in the London Borough of Barnet. The group worked on their photography skills, which included portraits, still life, use of theatre space to take dramatic photos crafts and national costumes photographed from unusual angles. They also undertook other creative work such as poetry, prose and film-making. The group also went on outings to museums, art galleries and other places of interest and participated in health & dance workshops.
