Services
Mother and Toddler Group for Asylum Seekers and Refugees

This project consists of organising a weekly group for asylum seeker and refugee mothers and their under 5’s. It is held at The Hyde Childern's Centre once a week for 2 hours and it provides them with a supportive learning environment.

The mums learn English through reading, singing, activity, craft and free play sessions with their babies and toddlers. A separate ESOL lesson whilst the children are given a snack and entertained by volunteers is included.

The group’s focus  will be on educating the mums on areas such as learning through play, accessing library services, reading bed time stories, singing nursery rhymes in English, healthy eating for toddlers, dental hygiene, applying for nursery places etc.

External guests include a child nutritionalist whose 5 week programme would be of enormous benefit to the group.

The group runs on Mondays 10:00am -12:00pm (during term time only)

Venue: The Hyde Children's Centre, Hyde Crescent, NW9 7EY

General Advice

We provide advice, information and support to asylum seekers and refugees on a variety of issues including asylum support, housing, welfare benefits, immigration matters (OISC Level 1) and health.

We currently conduct weekly outreach clinics, on a drop-in and appointment basis, in two locations across the borough of Barnet:

Barnet College:  Fridays  11 - 12.30pm

Edgware Community Hospital: Tuesdays and Fridays  1 -3pm

We have strong links with local legal advice providers, and have established an asylum and immigration advice surgery in partnership with Duncan Lewis Solicitors.

The asylum and immigration advice surgery is held on the third and fourth Wednesday of every month.

ESOL Classes
We started this partnership project together with St. Mathias Church  Supported by The Church and Community Fund. The classes began in January 2008 with two levels: absolute beginners and beginners plus.

Our students have told us that our warm and friendly classes have become an important social link in their lives because they have a good social element to them in addition to learning English.   Our syllabus included practical lessons on health matters to enable the students to make medical appointments, explain dietary and medical needs and to know which emergency service to call in case of need.

Health Work

Much of our work is directly health focused. We provide advice on access to local health services. We are closely involved in policy work with local health authorities that impacts on asylum seekers and refugees, for example the access to and use of interpreters, overseas charging and the provision of counselling and psychotherapeutic services for adults and young people.

Barnet Refugee Service is consulted by Barnet Primary Care Trust on strategies to meet our client group’s needs. We deliver presentations to health professionals at conferences and seminars raising awareness of health issues, particularly relating to mental health, that affect asylum seekers and refugees. We provide health access and health promotion workshops, refugee awareness training sessions, and train smoking cessation advisors.

A Message From Our Patron

Last year I visited the Barnet Refugee Service, and met the trustees, the staff and some of the volunteers and clients.  I was moved and impressed by the real difference BRS has made to so many lives.
